KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Pay attention to what you tell yourself in the mirror especially after you have kids. Subconsciously we put our beliefs and thoughts about ourselves onto our children so make sure it's positive.

  • You can wear whatever you want, including jeans, but you've got to research brands. Warp + Weft makes a great plus-size jean with a comfortable stretchy waist.

  • We've come a long way when it comes to plus-size fashion but we're still lacking in brick and mortar stores. Even in a huge city like NY, most plus-size shopping is done online. Even still, we're light years ahead of Europe and Asia where larger sizes are almost impossible to find.

  • The first step in changing your inner dialogue is to realize what you're saying to yourself and stop. Forget jumping into positive affirmations. Just acknowledge the negative self-talk. Once you do that, find something positive you see in the mirror. This isn't about embracing the negative but instead focusing on the positive. You might never love your stretch marks, but you can find something you DO love.

  • Negative thoughts about our bodies have nothing to do with size. Women are taught from a young age to hate their bodies. We need to break the cycle for the next generation and finally change the dialogue. Be a rebel and love your body, right now, as is.

  • A big wake up call came when Katie realized there is no final destination to being "enough." If you weren't thin enough at 18 or in your 20s, what makes you think you'll get there now? You're running towards nothing, so just stop running.

  • Being bold and progressive isn't always about making big statements and starting movements. When Katie's husband decided to take her last name (an unusual and progressive move by most standards) they didn't see it as a big deal. They had a conversation and made a decision that suit their needs.

  • Like everyone we talk to, Katie wouldn't change her mom for anyone. She sees a lot of herself in her mom's personality and knows she wouldn't be who she is today and where she is if she'd been raised differently.
