KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • You have to have a vision for your life, whether that be personal or professional. Use vision boards, write it down in journals. However you do it, get specific. In Chen & Lei's case that was live events and merch, as well as collaborating with other mom duos like us! They can now scratch two of those three things off their list.

  • The worst thing you can do is gloss over life to make it pretty. That's how social media started. Thankfully, it's changing and raw, unfiltered voices are taking over. Putting out stories about struggle and pain and real life helps other moms feel like they're not alone.

  • Everyone thinks their mom stories are unique to them until they share them with other moms and realize that the challenges we face are universal and apply to all.

  • You have to trust yourself when it comes to manifesting your dreams. Believe in your abilities, your talents, skills, and above all, your vision for your future.

  • It's easy to get lost in your own head and feel overwhelmed by your dreams, especially when they're big. Break it down and take things step by step. Set out small goals and work smart. That might mean sliding into DMs, researching an influencer you admire, commenting on their posts and tagging them.

  • The key to leaving a mark in this heavily saturated market of social influencers and podcasters is to have a positive, contagious energy coupled with no fear.

  • There's a ton of work behind the scenes when it comes to bringing your dreams to fruition but it's all doable and the majority of it is free. It takes your time and effort but won't cost anything monetary.

  • With respect to racial inequality, the most important thing is to think critically and build empathy. Ironically, the pandemic afforded everyone the opportunity to stop and internalize what was happening around them. Though it's been going on for a long time, it went largely ignored. But people were forced to finally take a hard look at the truth and that's the first step to making lasting change.

  • Dialogue between blacks and whites is critical. Especially about what you don't know or understand. Chen and Lei aren't against white people educating themselves. But it's onerous to place that responsibility on black people, too.

  • Chen and Lei both work full time as a high school teacher and with a non-profit group. They work on weekends and in the evenings to build their podcast, attract viewers and lay out the steps to manifesting their dreams, which just goes to show, all it takes is the desire and you're halfway there.

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT CHEN & LEI:

Chen and Lei are two new moms trying to navigate their way through motherhood, marriage and relationships. They met when they were each on maternity leave. Bored and lonely, they were set up on a blind "mom date" and immediately hit it off. The rest, as they say, is history. When they realized how much they had in common they decided to start a podcast to discuss all the things without filters. All while the kids nap, of course.
