As parents, it’s natural to feel intimidation or fear of the topic of suicide, but parental support is key to helping your kids with their own suicidal thoughts or helping them cope if someone they know is talking about it. Asking questions, creating a safe space, and knowing where to get help is a great place to start when navigating this topic with your kids. Stacey Freedenthal, PhD, LCSW, is a suicidologist, educator, writer, psychotherapist, consultant, and speaker. She has authored two books: Loving Someone with Suicidal Thoughts: What Family, Friends, and Partners Can Say and Do, and Helping the Suicidal Person: Tips and Techniques for Professionals.
